Jagmohan Malhotra, known by the mononym Jagmohan, was a former Indian civil servant and politician. A high-handed and combative civil servant turned politician, he switched from the Congress to the BJP. In his long career, he served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Goa, Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and for three terms as Member of Parliament for New Delhi. In the cabinet, he served as Union Minister for Urban Development and Tourism.
Born on 25 September 1927, was a civil servant by career. He later entered politics and hold many prestigious offices. Jagmohan was Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Development Authority for over seven years. He was the youngest Lt. Governor of Delhi and held the prestigious office for two terms. Jagmohan’s second term as L-G saw the successful culmination of Asiad, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), and even the Non-Aligned Movement conference of 1983. Jagmohan also had the distinction of being the Lt. Governor of Goa and Daman and Diu. From 1984 to 1989, he was Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Jagmohan joined the BJP and was made a minister in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Cabinets. He served ably as Minister for Urban Development, Tourism, and Communication.
Jagmohan penned many books including My Frozen Turbulence in Kashmir, Rebuilding Shahjahanabad, the Walled City of Delhi, Island of Truth, The Challenge of Our Cities, and many others. He was honored with the award of Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1977, and Padma Vibhushan in 2016. He passed away in Delhi on 3 May 2021 at the age of 94. He is survived by his son Manmohan
